Fun with Hashtags

Being a brand on social media can be tough. What are your followers interested in? When’s the best time to post? And on what channel? These – and probably a dozen other questions – swirl through the heads of marketing departments on a daily basis. Yes, it’s obviously important to think about the dollars and cents, and driving your customers to convert. But sometimes we forget to do one other important thing:

Have fun!

I always get a kick out of brands on Twitter that see a trending topic and jump in. I noticed today that the hashtag “80s Text Messages” was trending, and when I clicked on it, one of the first tweets was from IHOP:

IHOP Twitter 80s Text Messages

As a child of the 80s, I found it pretty amusing. Can IHOP directly attribute any sales today to this tweet? Probably not. But thanks to a heads-up (and funny) social media team, maybe they gained a little attention. After all, there’s only so many tweets about $4 pancake specials that followers can see.

Give it a try yourself – but as a warning, always check out what the hashtag means before you tweet!
